Description: The Time Machine is a large device, capable of supporting a single man (possibly two). It's made from an assortment of materials and its exact appearance is only hinted at—Wells writes about it being squat, ugly, and solid looking, having a "saddle," resting upon legs, and mounting a railing. Among the materials used in its construction are: brass, ebony, ivory, nickel, quartz, and rock crystal. Two levels control the machine—one sending the machine forward, the other back. A series of dials marks days, thousands of days, millions of days, and thousands of millions, showing the machine's progress through time.

Traveling to and from a distant time does take time itself. The story gives the impression that travel through time occurs at a faster rate the further one goes. Thus, there is no set "X years in X minutes" rate, meaning getting to a certain point in time seems to take as much time as is dramatically required. The time machine also rocks and shifts while traveling, and stopping it too suddenly will certainly pitch the rider from the saddle to the ground.
