Background/History: Grimjack is the street name of John Gaunt. Created by John Ostrander and Timothy Truman, Gaunt first appeared as a backup in First Comics' Warp and Starslayer series, before having his own comic. The series ran for over 65 issues and was quite popular, with Gaunt (or versions thereof) popping up in Marvel's New Mutants, Zelazny's second Amber series, and a background picture in a Shadowrun Adventure. The following write-up is based on material presented the first 25 issues of his comic.

Gaunt lives in the pandimensional city of Cynosure, which he describes in "Mortal Gods": "The city's name is Cynosure. Sweet Cynosure, built where the multi-verse meets. Cross the street and sometimes you've crossed a dimension! The laws of physics change from block to block. Magic works over here, science over there."

Born in "The Pit," the area where the city's poor hide, Gaunt was sent to the Arena for stealing. Here he learned how to fight and how to use an assortment of weapons. It was here that he also met his closest friend, BlackJacMac.

At some point, John escaped the arena and left the city, ending up in the dimension of Pdwyr, where he met Rhian, his first true love. It was here he first learned something of magic, discovering that although he had the power, he did not have the control to become a sorcerer.

Leaving Pdwyr, he returned to Cynosure to fight in the Demon Wars, only to discover that Pdwyr had been ravaged by demons in his absence. Mad with grief, he hooked up with Major Lash and the Lawkillers. Eventually breaking free of the Major's control, Gaunt returned to Cynosure. joining first Cadre, a special force of operatives and then the TDP or Trans-Dimensional Police. After a disagreement with his commanding officer over regulations, Gaunt quit the force and struck out on his own.

Gaunt now lives in the Pit, in the back of Munden's Bar, which he owns. His own words describe him best: "I bust people out of prison, hunt down vampires, fight alien gods—all the fun jobs people are too squeamish or too polite to do themselves. ... Call me a mercenary. Call me an assassin. Call me a villain. I am all that and more."
(A Shade of Truth Grimjack Issue 1)

Personality/Motivation: The Dancer is a former gladiator who has attempted at least one time before to take over the city of Cynosure. Seeing Gaunt as a major obstacle, the Dancer has done his best to remove him or, failing that, manipulate Gaunt's actions to further his own ends.

Major Lash has a long standing hatred for Gaunt and would like nothing better than to see him dead.

Gaunt's personality can best be described with the following quotes (taken from A Shade of Truth Grimjack Issue 1): "I use the half-truths and lies as much as anyone. But give me any glimpse of the truth, any shade of it at all, and I have to have it. ... The truth kills only what's rotten. Lies fester and rot the soul and destroy what little hope we have for the future. ... You can ignore the truth if you want. But first, you have to know it. ... I know no other way that's worth living."

And from issue 9, All My Sins Remembered: "I think, therefore I am - but am I therefore as I think I am? Loyal to my word, faithful to my friends, seeker of truth?"

Powers/Tactics: Aside from a large selection of skills, Gaunt has no real powers per say. He has sorcererous talent and power, but no real control, his is the soul of a warrior. I've given him Magic Skill to represent this. In many places in Cynosure, magic runs free, and one can dispense with traditional spell casting. At least once, Gaunt's power manifested while he was drunk, resulting in his summoning the shades of all those he had killed over the years.

Gaunt's mental defense represents certain techniques he's learned over the years to keep himself sane. It is exhausting and can be broken by outside influences (like some one slapping him).

Gear: Gaunt usually is armed with a revolver, an automatic pistol, a pump-action sawed-off shotgun with a pistol grip, a sword, knife (or two) and grenades. He has access to a rather large armory and will often carry whatever seems appropriate of the situation. This could be defined as a large VPP of gadgets.

Appearance: Gaunt is a tall man, standing about 6' 3". He has a strong but wry build, and his bodily is heavily scarred. He turned 50 in issue 25 and often comments that he is getting 'old'. Gaunt's hair is black, with a white streak down the left side. He usually wears it long... very long. A long, thin scar runs down the left side of his face and across his left eye.

Gaunt has no set costume, although his typical mode of dress is tan jodhpurs, a dark blue long sleeved shirt, red scarf, purple cloak, purple beret, boots and red fingerless gloves. Although he doesn't appear to wear any body armor, it seems likely that he does.
