Ecology: The akaana are a winged race of humanoids who dwell in mountain caves. Pure carnivores, they prey on a wide variety of small animals, including goats, pigs, and if they can get away with it—people.
Personality/Motivation: Normal animal motivations. The akaana are highly intelligent, having their own language and even a king of sorts.
Powers/Tactics: Well-equipped with sharp teeth and talons, the akaana like to swoop down on a target, grabbing it with their prehensile feet before tearing it to pieces with with claws and teeth.
Appearance: An akaana stands about six to six-and-half feet tall, with a lean, muscular build. The head is long and narrow, with narrow yellow eyes, a thin hooked nose, and a wide mouth filled with wolf-like fangs. The shoulders are broad, with a deep chest and a sternum that juts out from the torso. This helps support a pair of leathery moth-like wings that measure a full eighteen feet from tip to tip.
Designer's Notes: The akaana appear in the Solomon Kane story Wings in the Night, in which Kane realizes they are the origin of the harpy stories from Greek myth. In Wings in the Night the akaana number no more than a hundred, with no females or young. A dying race, they prey on the people of a local village where Kane is staying, causing him to lure them into a trap and destroy every last one of them.
In order to simulate the difficulty the local natives had in killing the akaana, I've given them a PD of 6, fully Resistant. This should stop most arrow fire and will even make them able to stand up to spear thrusts and ax blows. If you feel this is too powerful, then drop it down to a PD of 4, fully Resistant. Of course, one could also place a Limitation of 1/2 DEF Versus Steel Weapons And Firearms (-1/4) on the 6 PD of Damage Resistance to simulate the effect Kane's weapons had on the akaana.
