Background:
Nanaki was born and raised in Cosmo Canyon. When he was young, he parents faced off an invasion by the Gi, a monster-like tribe. While his mother fought to the bitter end, his father fled further into the canyon. The Gi were driven off, but Nanaki was left an orphan, and the last of his kind. He was raised by the inhabitants of Cosmo Canyon, and particularly and old sage named Bugenhagen who Nanaki always saw as his "grandfather."
Later in life (47 human years old; still a teenager to his people), Nanaki was captured by a Shinra expedition. Hojo, Shinra's chief scientist took an immediate interest in him, and had him shipped to Midgar for experimentation. There he was rescued by Cloud, Tifa and Barret, who had raided the tower to find Aeris. They named him Red XIII, the term Hojo had used for him when he refused to tell them his true name. Red agreed to help them escape the tower, and to travel with them only as far as Cosmo Canyon.
Personality/Motivation:
Red is a loner, through and through. His people have always protected Cosmo canyon, and he is determined to do such as well, alone if he has to. Although he begrudgingly accepts others' help, he refuses to get close to them. He warms somewhat to the carefree and friendly Aeris, but remains mostly gruff to the others.
Tactics/Powers:
Red uses an unusual weapon consisting of a pair of sharpened metal blades attached to the back of his neck. He attacks by leaping at the opponent and flipping forwards, raking them with the blades as he does. He can also summon his internal strength, generating a field around him long enough to rush straight through his enemy.
Appearance:
Red is a red-furred, lion-like creature with a spiky red mane the runs along the back of his head and neck. He has a long tail tipped with a glowing tuft of fur, thick paws and a lean build. His body is marked all over with tattoos, given to him by Hojo for documentation; most prominent of these is the roman XIII on his left foreleg. His right eye is gone; permanently shut with a scar over the socket.
