Background:
Steiner was born and raised in the city of Alexandria. He was inducted into the army, and slowly rose through the ranks. He eventually earned the command of the Knights Pluto, the only male squadron in the female-dominated Alexandrian army. He constantly clashed with general Beatrix, head of the army, over the way his men were ridiculed and ignored by the other soldiers.

Steiner's primary duty was to serve the queen and protect the princess. Thus when he discovered the princess missing from her own birthday celebration, he panicked. He ran throughout the castle, searching for her, only to find her escaping to the troupe's airship with Zidane. He followed, and wound up on stage in the middle of the play. He attacked Zidane and the troupe, blowing their cover and causing them to flee. The airship was shot down in flight, and Steiner wound up with the others.

Steiner agreed to travel with Zidane solely to protect the princess. He continues to search for a way to get her home, preferably taking Zidane into custody as well.

Personality/Motivation:
Steiner has been described as being as big and strong as an ox. If that is true, then he's certainly as smart as an ox as well. He lacks initiative and rarely thinks for himself. He is blindly loyal to Queen Brahne and Princess Garnet, and strives to serve one and protect the other. When Garnet's orders contradict his mission, he becomes confused and unsure what to do. He is often frustrated, and tends to jump on the spot when angry. He distrusts Zidane, but respects Vivi as a friend and ally.

Quote: "Having sworn fealty, must I live my life in servitude?"

Tactics/Powers:
Steiner is an expert with his sword. He is beginning to learn special "sword art" techniques, allowing him to focus his chi through his sword. His only power to date is the "Minus Strike," which increases in power as he grows weaker. When in trance, his already considerable strength is increased dramatically.

In combat, Steiner will rush the enemy headlong. Although somewhat simple, he will not lose himself in battle, and does his best to protect the others. He devised cooperative tactics with Vivi, where he strikes at the same time as Vivi casts a spell.

Appearance:
Steiner is a tall, broad-shouldered man in his thirties. He always wears heavy plate armor with a huge sword strapped over his back. The armor is rusty and old, and makes a horrible clanking noise whenever he moves. When in trance, the armor becomes new and clean, glowing white.
