Background/History: A native of Japan (before it was destroyed by the Gears), Baiken's parents were slaughtered when the Gears attacked the institution where they lived. Baiken survived the attack at the cost of her right arm and left eye. Standing amid the wreckage, the young Baiken caught sight of a man surrounded by flames and Gears. She knew, intuitively, this man was the enemy, and has made it her quest to track him down and exact the revenge of her people on him.
Personality/Motivation: Baiken is a strong-spirited woman, known to for a "shoot-first-ask-questions-later" attitude and for getting into fights over the smallest of matters. A stubborn woman, she holds firmly onto her beliefs and will argue them unto the bitter end. However, she will change her mind if obviously proven wrong. As a martial artist dedicated to her art, Baiken has put most worldly concerns behind her and concentrates on one supreme goal: tracking down "The Man."
Quote: "Don't think that you're stronger than me..."
Powers/Tactics: As she only has one arm, Baiken has had to develop her own swordstyle. She wields her sword in both fore and reverse grips (i.e. with the blade running along her arm). Her preferred technique is to block incoming strikes and then counterattack, specifically with her Sakura strike. She'll use her other strikes as needed, reserving her Crescent Slash for Stunned opponents and her Overhead Slash for leaping foes. If caught in close quarters, Baiken will not hesitate to engage in a variety of punches and kicks and likes to set up foes with a Hip Throw followed by a Stab.
In addition to her more normal kenjustsu maneuvers, Baiken has also developed some powerful sword techniques. Her Senkyoko technique involves her whirling her sword tightly around her body, cutting anyone who dares to get close. The Tsurane Sanzu Watashi is a series of three hard slashes in rapid succession (Baiken will usually announce "Ten Chi Nin" as she makes the attack. This translates to: "Ten" (Heaven), "Chi"(Earth), "Nin" (human).). Her last technique, the Yozanken, involves whirling her sword about her body, striking at everyone in range. The blow can be blocked, but not dodged.
Attached to Baiken's missing arm is a short length of chain with a four-tined claw on the end. This weapon is used to pull an unexpecting foe into sword range. Baiken tends not to use this weapon, preferring to keep it a surprise.
Appearance: Baiken stands 5'5" in height and weighs all of 99 lbs. She has pale skin, peach-colored eyes, and pink hair tied up into a waist-length ponytail at the top of her head, with a long scar over her (missing) left eye. Across her forehead and over her right eye runs along some sort of symbol painted onto her skin. Her right arm ends at the elbow (or so I presume) with the chain and claw attached to what's left.
For clothing Baiken wears a white kimono (with a black torso section) that falls to mid-calf. The sleeves are trimmed in red, and there is a large red sun symbol on the back of the kimono and repeated on the lower skirt. The kimono is worn open to the waist (revealing that for such a small woman, Baiken is surprisingly well-endowed), and is kept belted by a reddish-pink obi (belt). She keeps her sheathed sword thrust through the obi.
Designer's Notes: Baiken is from a video game titled Guilty Gear X" The game is set in the future (roughly 2200 AD) after a prolonged war between humanity and biological weapons known as "gears." I've not played the game myself, but felt the character designs and descriptions were far to interesting to not turn into useful (and playable) HERO System characters.
Baiken is written up pretty much as presented in the game. I edited some of her powers and gave her a scattering of skills that fit with the image of a lone woman wandering the word in search of "The Man." As a side note, Alex Fauth states: "Random rumors and fan speculation say that Baiken is either The Man herself (not bloody likely) or May's mother (May is known to be Japanese.). However, since fan speculation has said that Axl Low or Sol-Badguy are also The Man (so... Sol created himself? HAH!) I tend to ignore these."
As a further note, Baiken (at least the GGX version) bears a great resemblance to Kenshin Himura from the anime/manga Rurouni Kenshin. Her hairstyle matches his (and is reddish to boot, while the original Guilty Gear version of Baiken has brown hair), and she even dresses a bit like him. Apparently the character designer thought Kenshin Himura was female and made Baiken as a homage.
Baiken is perfect as a fantasy swordswoman for high-level fantasy games or in a martial arts setting (naturally).
