Description: Carrietta White was born in Chamberlain, Maine in 1963 to Margaret White, whose husband Ralph died in an accident while Margaret was pregnant. Margaret was intensely religious and somewhat deranged; she frequently punished Carrie for “sinful thoughts” with beatings and extended periods locked in a small closet. Carrie, who was both shy and poorly dressed, was an extremely unpopular teenager, and spent most of her time alone. Therefore, it’s no surprise she was able to hide the increasing manifestations of telekinetic power she exhibited until she was nearly seventeen. When she had her first period in the gym showers, her confusion and fear led to several other girls taunting and yelling at her, which resulted in several of the students being punished by not being permitted to attend their prom. These students planned their revenge on Carrie. At the same time, several other students felt sorry for how she had been treated, and arranged for one of them (a popular, smart boy named Tommy Ross) to be her date for the prom. Though at first she suspected a trick, Tommy eventually won her over, and despite her mother’s protestations she agreed to attend the prom with him.

Much of that night was magical for Carrie. People were being pleasant to her, and Tommy was a kind and attentive date. However, the other kids played a cruel trick on Carrie, first rigging the election of the prom’s king and queen so that Tommy and Carrie won, and then dumping buckets of pigs’ blood on the pair during the coronation ceremony. Carrie snapped under the resulting humiliation (and Tommy’s injury from being struck by the falling bucket.) Her powers fully manifested, and she sealed the doors to the gymnasium, trapping the promgoers inside while a fire broke out. Walking home across the town of Champberlain, she also used her powers on two gas stations and local power lines and fire hydrants, leading to several more explosions and eventually over two hundred deaths. When she returned to her home, her mother tried to kill her with a knife, stabbing her in the shoulder. Carrie killed her with her abilities, and then crawled away to die as her house burned.

However, despite appearances, Carrie did not die. Instead, she was rescued by employees of the mysterious secret government agency known only as The Shop, a black-budget group under the theoretical management of the CIA that concentrated on recruiting agents with paranormal abilities. She was moved to a secret facility in upstate Maine, where she recovered from her injuries and was trained to better control her powers. She adjusted well; though she still retains the influences of her mother and her religious upbringing, she naturally tends to try to satisfy authority figures, and her handlers in The Shop were well-trained in psychological counseling and manipulation. In 1981, however, the Shop’s facility was burned down by young pyrokinetic Charlie McGee, and many of the staff were killed. Carrie’s case file was transferred over to the Office of Scientific Intelligence, and her new caseworker is psychiatrist Jerry Robinson, a kindly man who sees Carrie as something more than a potential weapon. Though she’s been through fairly extensive training as a potential agent, she has yet to see any actual field work.
