Description: John Drake was born in Ireland in 1928, but moved to England as a teenager. Little is known about his early life- he was a bomber crewman in the RAF after World War II.
By 1960 he was working as a Special Agent for NATO, but by 1964 he had changed jobs and now worked for M9, one of the smaller branches of British Military Intelligence that was descended from the original MI9, the section responsible for assisting resistance fighters in Axis-occupied areas. He stands about 5’11, with short and well-maintained brown hair and deep-set, steely blue eyes.
Drake has a testy relationship with his superiors, who recognize his excellence as an agent but are constantly frustrated by his obstinacy and his tendency to go “lone wolf” on them periodically. He also has an extremely strong sense of personal ethics, which he clings to with an astonishing stubbornness. He dislikes killing, though he will if there is no other course of action, and he finds guns personally distasteful and refuses to carry one (yet another thing that annoys his superiors.) In his opinion, becoming personally involved with anyone he encounters “on the job” is hazardous- therefore, he avoids both romantic entanglements or becoming particularly close even to his allies.
Drake is frequently very contradictory in his behavior—he occasionally shows a clever wit and a gift for turns of phrase, and loves classical music. On the other hand, almost all of the fake identities he uses are either named “Smith” or “Schmidt,” as though advertising that he had no imagination.
