Description: “Mark Harris” is the name given to a mysterious man found washed up on a California beach in 1977, barely alive, with webbed fingers and strange, intensely colored eyes. The paramedics who rescued him eventually discovered that the handsome, quiet man was amnesiac; furthermore, he needed to breathe water at least every twelve hours to survive. He was turned over to the Foundation For Ocean Research, a private think-tank with extensive connections to the US Navy, and the care of Dr. Elizabeth Merrill. Over the next several years “Mark” worked for the Foundation, helping them with their submarine-based explorations of the ocean’s depths and incurring the wrath of the mysterious Mr. Schubert, a billionaire madman whose plan to instigate World War III was narrowly averted by Mark and Elizabeth. Their research into Mark’s past has led them to believe that Mark is the last survivor of an underwater subspecies of humanity, whose city (called “Atlantis” by Merrill and Schubert) may have been destroyed, perhaps by nuclear tests or something even more sinister.
Harris is remarkably strong, adapted to underwater existence, and friendly and gentle despite finding life on the surface strange and confusing. He’s fond of eating yellow plankton. The FOR is based in an old lighthouse and outlying buildings in a coastal town called Hastings Point, and owns two high-tech submarines used for deep-sea exploration (that seem to regularly encounter aliens, portals to other dimensions, and all sorts of weirdness.)
