Description: Matt Helm was born in 1923 in Minnesota. He was thrown out of college in 1941 after a terrible brawl with a homicidal fellow student, and worked for a year or so as a news photographer. He joined the Army, where he served first as a rifleman and then in Military Intelligence as a sniper. There, he worked under the government agent known to him only as “Mac,” who took orders directly from the highest offices of the war effort. He did clandestine work throughout Europe, but tired of the life and after the war “retired” to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he married a USO nurse named Elizabeth and had three kids. From 1947 until 1958 he made a quiet living as a photographer and writer of Wild West pulp stories.

In 1958 he was forced back into action when an old associate of his from his MI days kidnapped his daughter, forcing him to help her in her activities as an enemy agent. He turned to Mac for assistance, and Mac brought him in to the new government intelligence agency he ran that had grown out of their old unit. Though Matt was able to rescue his daughter, the event was so traumatic that Elizabeth and he divorced, and Matt went back to work for Mac as a freelance agent, counterspy and assassin.

Matt is 6’4 and weighs less than two hundred pounds on a “beanpole frame.” He is quite attractive, especially to women drawn to “dangerous-looking” men. He currently maintains a cover identity as “Paul Corcoran,” a professional photographer, and works as a contract assassin for various agencies of the US Government under the code name “Eric.” He prides himself on his professionalism as an assassin, following orders (at least most of the time) and never allowing himself to become emotionally involved in a situation (though, of course, this is always harder to do in practice than in theory.) He’s a genuine tough guy, regularly taking beatings that would put lesser men in a wheelchair for life, and is a crack shot with a rifle (and not bad with any other type of gun.) He’s grimly pragmatic, and certainly not above shooting people in the back or otherwise behaving “dishonorably” if it’s the most efficient way to get the job done.

This adventure takes place between the novels The Ambushers and The Shadowers.

Quote: “I vaulted to one side, dropping over the foot of the bed and landing on his partner, driving the boots in hard. It wasn't a very nice thing to do, but I wasn't feeling very nice."
