Background/History: Son Gohan is Son Goku's first son and is named after Goku's "grandfather." We first see him in Volume 17, right before Raditz arrives. His story runs like this --

Raditz kidnaps Gohan in order to force Goku to destroy the inhabitants of the Earth. During the fight that follows, Gohan displays an amazing burst of energy and almost defeats Raditz by physically slamming into him.

After the death of Goku and Raditz, Piccolo takes Gohan off to train him. He teaches the boy to survive in the wild, to be self-reliant and to fight. Gohan becomes very loyal to Piccolo and ends up dressing like him for quite some time afterwards. Piccolo also lops off Gohan's tail, after Gohan sees the moon and turns into a were-monkey.

During the fight with Nappa and Vegita, Gohan once again shows how powerful he can be if pushed. He also turns into a monkey again, defeating Vegita in the process. Soon afterwards, Gohan, Kulilin, and Bulma travel to Nameck to find the dragon balls. Along the way, Gohan gets into a number of fights and rescues Dende from certain death.

By the time the Artificial Humans arrive, Gohan is 10 and very strong. He trains in the Room of Spirit and Time right before the Cell Game, reaching Super-Saiyajin and demonstrating amazing levels of power. Goku has such confidence in his son he sends Gohan out to fight Cell after Goku forfeits the match. Gohan loses the fight until Cell destroys Number 16. At that point, spurned on by Number 16's words, Gohan demonstrates the true extent of his power, beating Cell so bad he is forced to spit up Number 18 and then nearly vaporizing Cell with a single kamahameha. After Goku dies teleporting the exploding Cell away, Gohan (with Vegita's aid) manages to totally disintegrate Cell.

Once the story resumes in Volume 34, Gohan attends Orange High School in Satan City. He fights crime as "The Great Saiyaman," teaches his little brother Goten how to fight, and teaches Beedel how to fly. Eventually, he is trained by the Kaio-shins to become (possibly) the most powerful Saiyajin in the series. At the end of the series he marries Beedel and ends up with a daughter, Pan.

Personality/Motivation: Simply put, Gohan is a nice guy. He doesn't really want to fight, although he isn't adverse to the idea. In truth, he wants to be great scholar (which is also what Chi-Chi wants Gohan to be). He tries to avoid fighting—unless it is really needed, but also does his best to uphold the common good, such as fighting crime in Satan City. Gohan falls pretty hard for Beedel (although it takes him some time to realize this) and will do his best to defend and protect her if the situation calls for it. Interestingly enough, despite all his book learning, Gohan is a bit clueless about how the world works at times.

Powers/Tactics: As a Saiyajin (or, more accurately 1/2 Saiyajin) Son Gohan can achieve the high-energy state known as "Super Saiyajin." This state is marked by his hair turning bright golden yellow and spiky, and his chi manifesting as a visible aura. His chi reaches such high levels that anyone with any amount of "Detect Chi" should be able to pick him up. Super Saiyajin mode is marked by a massive increase in the character's strength, agility, durability and so on. Note the SSJ Aid also feeds into the Multipower pool and the slots, boosting Gohan's chi blasts as well! Interestingly enough, Son Gohan never really achieved Super-Saiyajin 2nd or 3rd Grade. Instead he goes straight to Full-Power Super-Saiyajin..

Gohan has a number of specific chi attacks. They are:

Appearance: Son Gohan is a touch taller than his father, with a well muscled and well-defined build. His hair is kept cropped short on the sides, is spiky on top, and hangs down across his forehead in front. He used to dress just like Piccolo, with a dark purple bodysuit and a white cloak, but now often wears an orange ghi with a blue undershirt that matches his father's costume. Gohan's Great Saiya-man costume is black body suit, green tunic, white boots and gloves, a long red cloak, sunglasses, and long white towel knotted to cover his hair.
