MITCH'S CONTACTS
Background/History: Mitch is the son of Malachi Brogan, and the latest in a long line of Brogans who have been police officers. He attended Angelus Technical Institute and received an Associate's Degree in Avionics before enrolling in the Angelus Police Academy, after which he went into Vehicular Forensics as a crash scene investigator. In the course of his duties he underwent voluntary surgery to receive cybernetics which allow him to interface directly with vehicle computers. Besides their technical applications, these implants also made him one of the APD's crack driver/pilots.
When Mitch's father 'died' in 2112, then resurfaced in XSWAT, Mitch was the only immediate relative who made the connection and refused to believe Malachi was truly dead. Determined to find the truth, Mitch began investigating XSWAT's famous 9th Squad, and came very close to exposing the real story. After the Gurzorath Incident of 2113, Malachi Brogan and Jamadigni Renuka, the newly appointed XSWAT Director, hatched a plot to keep Mitch quiet, and keep an eye on him, by recruiting him into XSWAT as Renuka's personal driver. They all got more than they bargained for when Mitch accepted the deal however. Mitch and Jama became romantically involved almost immediately, which made things rather complicated for both of them.
There was no way to keep secret the fact that the Director and her new driver had something going on. After two years, many in XSWAT took it for granted, but some said Mitch wouldn't have a job if weren't for his relationship with the Director, or his connection with Malachi Brogan. Mitch finally decided to prove them wrong, and left HQ to take a field assignment. He spent a year with a regular squad, and attained the rank of Corporal, but it nearly killed him. The Yakuza knew who Mitch was, and they used him to get to the Director, sending him back to her on the verge of death. After he recovered (thanks to her) Mitch returned to his old assignment as the Director's driver, and more importantly, brought their relationship into the open by proposing to her.
Now they've been married for seven years, and Mitch has been her driver ever since. Now that he's proven himself in the field, nobody calls him 'Brogan's kid' or 'the Director's boy-toy' any more. Mitch has become something of an XSWAT institution—he's the Director's Man, always at her side (in public), XSWAT's most loyal officer. Behind the scenes at XSWAT HQ, he's Director Renuka's unofficial 'emissary' when she can't be in two places at once. Or at least, he was, until recently. Last week, the news broke that they're getting a divorce. No one knows why.
It came as a complete surprise to everyone at XSWAT—the Director suddenly has a new driver, Mitch Brogan (now a Sergeant) has moved into his own place, and he's got a new assignment, this time as a squad leader. And still, no one has any idea what caused their split. They aren't talking about it, to anyone in XSWAT, to the media, or even to their families. And if their lawyers know anything, they're keeping quiet as if their lives depend on it! This has led to all kinds of wild rumors about Mitch, and some of them aren't very flattering. Some XSWAT personnel think the divorce was his fault, and the Director is hanging him out to dry, hoping Mitch fails as a squad leader. And judging by the makeup of his new squad, they may be right!
Personality/Motivation: After ten years with Madam Director Renuka, it often seems as if Mitch lives and breathes XSWAT. The truth is, he's a Brogan, and that means he always was and always will be a cop, no matter what. He takes after his father, Malachi, in other ways as well—he has a tendency to look at things seriously, although he's generally more upbeat. (It helps that he's neither legally dead nor possessed by a soul-devouring entity!) He also has a touch of the sardonic 'Brogan wit' although it's a bit more restrained in his case. One thing that sets Mitch apart from most people is that he's hopelessly car crazy. Everything about vehicles fascinates him, and that fixation extends to his police work. He'll often get more and better information from interrogating a car, rather than its driver!
Mitch's primary motivation is loyalty—to his squad, to XSWAT, and to the Director. No matter what happens, he's still in love with Jama, but right now he can't let that get in the way of what he has to do. He's handling the whole divorce situation remarkably well, actually.
Quote: "No, I'm not going to talk about that. We have our reasons. Yes, we're getting divorced, but I'm not leaving XSWAT. She still signs my paychecks, and I've still got a job to do here. No more questions. Thank you."
Powers/Tactics: Mitch has a wide variety of skills due to his education and career path. He learned a number of technical skills to get his Associate's Degree, then went to the Police Academy, and finally took the XSWAT training course. His wife has also taught him a lot of things over the years—he's learned about XSWAT traditions, 9th Squad history, entities, and the occult. They also practice Pentjak Silat on a regular basis, which supplements the combat training Mitch got at the Academy. And of course his talent as a driver is second to none.
Mitch's only 'edge' is his cybernetic vehicle interface. If a vehicle has a computer (most do, in 2123) he can plug in, and access any data stored on it. He can also enhance the vehicle's performance while driving, compensate for damaged systems, alter its transponder signals, or shut them off completely.
Mitch's most important assets, however, are all the perks he's accrued as the Director's husband. He's got connections to lots of important people in 9th squad, and their relatives, not to mention his former associates in the APD. He has access to the Director's residence, personal vehicles, and even 9th Squad's old hide-out from ten years ago.
Campaign Use: Mitch Brogan is something of an anomaly in XSWAT—although he's been there ten years, and is considered a 'veteran', he only has a year of actual field experience, and has spent the rest of that time as the Director's driver. He's effectively an honorary member of XSWAT, albeit one who has proven himself. Now his status is once again in doubt, there are rumors that he may have betrayed the Director, and Mitch is definitely 'in over his head' as an inexperienced squad leader. But he doesn't have anything to prove now; he just wants to get the job done, whatever it takes.
