Manon Deroulede (acute on the first e, grave on the second) was a criminal law student in Montreal and a liaison with the local Service de Police. One day, while walking with her father, they were attacked by a Lucifer Folk - a demonic creature from another dimension. It was then that God appeared to her in a vision, saying that this creature had been sent from Hell to corrupt and kill, and that she had been granted the power to combat it and others like it. She "awoke" to discover her father under attack, and drew upon heretofore unknown telekinetic powers to defeat and kill the creature.

She discovered that she could make objects move with her mind, both with fine control and more forcefully without, and could use it to protect her and those nearby as a force wall.

The attack, and the powers she exhibited in response, drew the attention of the Attacked Mystification Police, a special police force created to combat magical and "demonic" threats. (In this world, magic is generally accepted as being "real" if still freaky; there are televised magicians' conferences and so forth.) The AMP have opened offices in the highest areas of "entity" activity: Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, and now Los Angeles. Manon was tabbed for the L.A. branch, as there were no other instances of activity in Montreal.

She looked upon her "detached service" with the AMP-LA as a "holy mission", and the local church was glad to oblige by granting her a set of St. John's Knives - specially enchanted and blessed blades, which she uses to directly combat the entities.

Her fellow officers are all, for the most part, equally gifted. Chief Linda Maverick is a "super-hacker" with an innate control of machines and computers; Aye Tehano, her sub-chief, uses totemic magic; Malia Gutierrez is a voodoo priestess (and aspiring screenwriter); Amelia Inverness is a "wild talent" magician/witch who may be part entity; Ezra Lysander has died on duty with the NYPD at least twice before, but literally revived himself from the dead both times...and so on.

Manon tends to be the most conservative of the group. She's soft-spoken, (partly because she's not speaking her native language), pleasant, and scrupulously tactful. The others bother her just a bit - particularly Amelia with her brash attitude and Malia with her odd juju, like keeping a spirit in a jar on her desk. Mostly she just smiles, turns, crosses herself, and walks away...

At her desk at work, she has a small "shrine". An open Bible, a crucifix, a statuette of Mary, hooks for her Knives and rosary beads, vials of holy water (for splashing on nasties), and an ofuda (Shinto/Japanese written prayer) that belonged to Takahashi, a fellow officer killed in the line of duty. She would pray in front of the shrine every morning. Elsewhere on her desk is her computer, which she can work telekinetically, a carved wooden totem given to her by Aye, and her coffee mug, which is huge and bears an inscription that reads "Give me coffee and no one gets hurt" in French <> (her one vice is that she's addicted to coffee; she gets cranky without it).

MANON DÉROULÈDE: 20 QUESTIONS

1: What is the character's name?
Manon Déroulède
Her name is pronounced something like <ma-NAW day-roo-LED>.

2: Character's sex?
Female

3: Character's physical size?
HEIGHT: 169 cm (5' 6 1/2")
B-W-H: 91-61-88 (36-24-35)
WEIGHT: 56 kg (123 lbs)

4: What is the color of the character's hair, eyes and skin?
(Are these natural colors, how is the hair worn, are those your original eyes, if not do they look normal? etc.)
Jet black hair, reaching to the middle of the back but often worn in a high ponytail. Very pale blue eyes and that ivory white complexion that kind of brands you as Canadian.

5: What is the character's general appearance ?
(How does he stand? How does he dress? Are you attractive? Do you try to look intimidating or casual?)
Her dress is conservative (high collared shirts, nothing showing above the knee) and extremely neat, often a bit too dressy for the situation, except when "working", i.e. opposing Lucifer Folk. In that case, she'll often make use of an athletic bodysuit or cat-suit. On the AMP, she'll wear the full uniform, except that she'll request a variant jacket with a Christian cross-motif on the shoulder patch, and even then, she'll customize it with a fleur-de-lys or fleurdelisé <FLEUH-duh-lee-ZAY> (Québec flag) on the lapels.

[Mike has informed me that her uniform jacket will have the hexagram filled in with gold stitching so it's no longer a occult symbol or Magen David. She'll wear a cross prominently on the front pocket, either stitched in or otherwise accessorized.]

She often wears a cross around her neck, and is almost always carrying her knives (usually hidden), no matter what the situation.

Her manner is usually quiet, calm, and professional, even on the town, but she can become very intense and intimidating when the mood seizes her, like in a righteous rage. She could be considered quite attractive, and can be absolutely stunning when she decides to turn on the charm—which she's not above doing every so often to get her way...

6: Where were you born?
Laval, Québec; la-VAHL, kay-BECK>

7: When?
14 Janvier 2009 (Jan. 14, 2009; she's 24)

8: Does the character have any family?
(If yes, do you know where they are? Do they know where you are? Do you care?)
Her mother and father are living in Saint-Denis <SAN duh-NEE>, a neighborhood of Montréal <MAWN-tray-AWL, locally often pronounced without the "t">. Her father works for the Communauté Urbaine <com-OON-oh-TAY er-BEN> (roughly, the local government), and is almost entirely recovered from being attacked by a Lucifer Folk. Her mother Thérèse works at La Bibliothèque Saint-Denis (the Saint-Denis Library) in the city. The library is known for its collection of antique books.

9: Where or how was the character educated?
(Corp school, "public" schooling, the school of hard knocks?)
She holds a degree in law from McGill University, but hasn't attained the bar anywhere. She steered into law enforcement and lay ecclesiastical studies after college.

10: What did the character do for a living previously?
She was going to become a lawyer, and had worked for a while with the La Service de Police de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal (SPCUM) as an "intern" to get a better idea of how law was enforced "on the street". She discovered that she liked police work.

11: Who is hunting the character and why?
She's made quite a name for herself as a religious crusader against Lucifer Folk, and she takes the name literally. Those Lucifer Folk who knew the rep would be after her, as would radical Satanists or those violently opposed to Christianity.

12: Does the character have any political beliefs? Religious?
She considers herself Québecoise before anything else, but isn't so violently opposed to Canada or the United States to consider herself a "patriote" <PAT-ree-AWT>.

Her religion is a large and vital part of her life. She believes that she has been chosen by God to be a warrior against Lucifer Folk, which are monsters from Hell sent by Satan to corrupt the innocent, or kill them in the attempt. Her psychokinetic powers are a divine gift; she will entertain no other explanation.

13: What is the character moral code?
(Will you kill? ... okay, stupid question... What do you define as an innocent? Do you have any sort of sexual code of ethics?)
Before the "revelation" of her powers, about three years ago, Manon considered herself a good Catholic, but she's much more driven about it now. She's not a nun, though, and doesn't see anything wrong with finding a good Christian man to settle down with someday. She also sometimes finds herself at odds with the Church (both Catholic and Protestant) for refusing "earthly directives" and praying for answers, leading her to be tolerant of her fellow officers and willing to use "earthly means" (like firearms) to continue the war against Lucifer Folk.

An innocent is one in which she can "see God". She relies on her intuition and spirituality to determine this; generally, it's those who have some hope of redemption.

14: Does the character have any goals?
(Is this enough for you? Do you have any ambitions beyond this? Is yes, how long are you willing to wait?)
To stop the Satanic "incursion" on Earth. Deep down, she'd also love to get back to being just plain Manon, the girl who likes ginger beef, Gerard De/pardieu movies, playing soccer, and lying on the beach at Prince Edward Island in July...but she believes that literally all the world is at stake.

15: What led the character to join the AMP?
(Are you trying to get back at someone? A personal plan? Will you leave? If so why?)
Her beliefs led her to search for a place, preferably in North America, where she would do the most good for the cause. Los Angeles is much more of a "hot spot" for Lucifer Folk than Montréal or Québec, and by coincidence, there was a branch of a police force dedicated to stopping Lucifer Folk there. With her police experience, she was a natural choice.

Since the AMP's and her own missions dovetail so well, it is extremely unlikely she'll be leaving any time soon, except for short vacations, even though she's probably terribly homesick for Montréal.

16: What is the character's personality?
(This is apart form just basic psych lims. Are you an idealist, radical, pessimist, militant, aloof etc.)
Manon comes across as quiet and reserved. She's dedicated and professional in her job—Linda Maverick will be "Captaine" unless she specifically requested otherwise—and introverted and pious off the job, though she's not humourless (her sense of humour is quite dry), nor is she evangelical about her faith. She prefers to "witness by example", though she'll happily discuss it with those willing to listen.

Still waters run deep, however. Underneath, Manon is a bit of a romantic. She likes flowers, nice clothes, long, giggly chats with her girlfriends at coffeebars, and "feminine" things...and would like to find "the right guy" and get married someday. For now, that's on hold, but she still has certain affectations in that direction, and she will appreciate the "sisterhood" of the AMP.

Paradoxically, she's quite capable of a righteous rage, though it would take something heinous for someone other than an "entité" <ON-tee-TAY> to trigger it. If that happens, she'll go into battle shouting prayers and battle cries in French, and won't stop until the Lucifer Folk is dispatched or the target is otherwise rendered harmless.

17: What is the character very good at?
(Aside from whatever skills you have written down, is there anything else your characters does well? Dealing with people, planning, taking care of buisness etc.)
I see Manon as being the group's communicator and peacemaker. She's going to make a genuine attempt to understand all her fellow officers and get them to work as a team. She realizes what valuable assets they are in her—and the AMP's—mission.

BTW, she also speaks English well. Only once in a great while will she run into a word she doesn't know or can't translate. She has a very slight accent.

18: Are there certain things the character just can't do?
(Get close to people, work well with others, handle money, think clearly under stress etc.)
Manon isn't going to be the most realistic or practical woman. She's gone from silly and romantic to God-fearing and crusading, but there's been little practicality learned between. She might need to be convinced to fall back and regroup instead of relentlessly attacking; to try and get some sleep and solve the problem in the morning instead of entering a marathon prayer-and-fasting session, and so on.

19: What does the character hate?
(MegaCorps? The media? Certain people? If so, why?)
Lucifer Folk, anything Satanic or anti-Christian (other religions do not necessarily qualify as "anti-Christian" unless they're out to kill Christians, burn churches, or something equally bad; believing something different isn't enough). She also doesn't like Los Angeles. She's a city girl, but this is ridiculous...

20: What does the character love?
Listed above, for the most part.

21: Is there anything else I should know?
Some phrases she'll be likely to say:

Dieu merci! <D'YUH mair-SEE>: Thank God!

Dieu seul en sait... <D'YUH SUHL on SAY>: God only knows...

Va á l'Enfer! <VA AH lon-FAIR>: Go to Hell!
(That's to actually go to the place...colloquially, it's "Va au diable!")

Dieu m'aider! <D'YUH ma-DAY>: God help me!
(Also "Dieu nous aider!", God help us!)

Dieu guide mon but! <D'YUH GEED mawn BOO>: God, guide my aim!

Que Dieu vous bénisse! <kuh D'YUH voo bay-NEESE>: God bless you!
(Not the same as when someone sneezes)
