Sam [Robert De Niro] from Ronin

Background/History: Little is known about Sam other than he’s ex-CIA and is in need of work. He obviously knows Paris fairly well, and speaks French fluently, so one can infer that either his time in the Agency was spent in Europe, or he came to live in France after leaving. He’s made a few brief comments about his past, such as at one point stating he spent time being interrogated. At the same time, his actions do speak louder than words, as he’s quite obviously experienced and skilled and is not a person to take lightly.

Of course, all of this is just a cover. “Sam” isn’t ex-CIA and he’s still in the agency. All of his actions, comments, statements, and the like are designed with one thing in mind: allow him to infiltrate a cell of Irish terrorists in order to get close to this real target.

Personality/Motivation: If Sam is anything, it’s cautious. He’s not one to go off half-cocked, and likes to consider the plan, create the plan, and stick to the plan. As he says early in the film “I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of,” and his lives up to this creed repeatedly. He’ll examine an area as close as he dares, even assuming the guise of a simple tourist, in order to get a closer look at an objective. Once on a location he’s gather information anyway he can—including such tricks as demoing a camera to someone while (while taking photos of desired targets), or by rigging a sign to fall to catch the reactions of bodyguards. Once he has a plan, he’ll stick to it, improvising only if events don’t go as planned.

Quote: “I’ll get you the case, but the price has gotta go up. If it's gonna be a amateur night, I want a hundred thousand dollars. I want it upfront. I want it in a bank account. I want another $100,000 when you get the case.”

Powers/Tactics: Sam seems to go with ‘what ever works.’ For example, he claims to have no favored weapon (aside for a stated liking for the Colt M1911), but will use pistols, assault rifles, and in one case a SAW to deal with the opposition. Pistols seem to be his favored weapon, and he’s quite good with them, often dropping targets with two closely-spaced rounds to the chest.

Appearance: Sam stands 5’9” with a lined face showing his age. His hair is black (but starting to gray), while his build is average.

Designer’s Notes: Sam is Robert De Niro’s character from the film Ronin. The character sheet is based on his comments and actions seen in the movie. However, since he was playing a role (that of “Sam”) some his comments are suspect (such as his talk about having been under interrogation). That said, he’s obviously quite capable and makes an excellent model for a starting character in any number of Dark Champions settings. To make him more powerful, up his SPD to 4 and give him a martial arts package of some sort. To make him less powerful remove Double Tap, Unimpressed, and all his CSLs except for his two with Small Arms.
