Fusor with her Stellar Lance
Fusor with her Stellar Lance
Background/History: As a system surveyor for Multi-Stellar United, Dana Sonne traveled from world to world, looking for the choicest planets on which MSU could place one of its mining and refining operations. To Dana, it seemed like the perfect job—she worked mostly alone, so she didn’t have anyone looking over her shoulder, and she was able to travel, visiting new worlds and systems constantly.

While in orbit around 1553 Ji Xiu (better known as Murphy’s World), Dana picked up an unusual energy signature while engaged in her standard planetary scans. Tracking the signal to its source resulted in her discovering a twisted and pitted length of rock, slowly spinning around its long axis, in high orbit over the planet. Taking a closer look (via EVA), Dana then found a glowing sphere, resting amid the micro-craters scattered over the object’s surface. Upon touching the surface of the sphere, Dana came into mind-to-mind contact with a semi-sentient being known as a Star Seed. Communicating its need telepathically, the Seed asked Dana to be its host. By doing so, the Seed would gain full awareness and mobility, and Dana would be granted the Seed’s inherent power. Dana, after some deliberation (as well as asking the Seed what sort of ‘power’ would be granted), accepted the Seed’s offer.

Upon merging with the Star Seed, Dana found herself transformed from a mere human into something much greater. She had become a living fusion reactor, capable of generating and manipulating staggering amounts of energy. Of course, such power does come with a price, and Dana soon discovered the merger hadn’t been a peaceful one. The Seed’s former home had been turned into so much dust, while her own starship had been reduced to a cloud of debris and scrap metal. However, all was not lost, as Dana discovered a long, spear-like weapon floating where the tiny moonlet had been.

Dubbing herself Fusor (as she had achieved a fusion reaction in her lifetime), Dana used her new-found spacewarping powers to return home. There she found Multi-Stellar United to be less than interested in her health and continued existence, and more curious about the Star Seed within her body. However, their attempt at subduing and restraining her severely underestimated the inherent power capabilities of her new body, and Dana blasted her way out of the MSU research facility, leaving quite a bit of smoking wrecking in her wake. Now on the run from her former employer (who has taken to hiring mercenaries and other paranormally-powered individuals in order to hunt her down), Fusor has set off to explore the stars, using her powers to deal with any number of strange and unusual threats along the way.

Personality/Motivation: Always one for boldly going where no one has gone before, Fusor has found little to complain about with her new powers. She can explore, just as she did before, but these days doesn’t need to stay within the pesky confines of a starship. She also can experience first-hand environments that would have been far too dangerous for her old self to even contemplate, and thinks nothing of diving down into Jovian atmospheres, walking amid the gaseous snow of frozen worlds, or bathing in the outflow of sulfurous volcanoes. At the same time, she also feels that powers such as hers are not to be squandered, and wishes to make positive use of them. Thus, she feels it’s her duty to defend and protect the people of the galaxy from the sort of threats that only Fusor (and those like her) can handle. So while currently she hasn’t joined any group of galactic guardians, that time is probably not far off.

While she no longer works for MSU, Fusor still tries to put her skills as surveyor to good use, and often hires herself out to small, free-lance mining operations. When she does so, she tries to keep her identity of Fusor under wraps, both so she can enjoy a more normal life, and to keep MSU from causing any trouble. However, she won’t let maintaining a ‘secret identity’ interfere with saving lives or stopping trouble makers, and will quickly assume her Fusor form if the need arises.

Quote: “Stand down, or taste the full fury of stellar fire!”

Powers/Tactics: As a biological fusion reactor, Fusor can generate, manipulate, and project massive amounts of energy. For example, she can unleash powerful blasts of searing heat, wrap herself in a protective energy field, absorb various forms of energy and convert it to her own use, fly unaided in both and atmosphere and in space, and can even open up localized wormholes and teleport from place to place. Her Stellar Lance allows Fusor to exert fine control over her base energy attacks. With it she can project a single devastating bolt (the 22d6 High-Yield Pulsar Bolt), or fine-tune her attacks as needed (she tends to prefer such Advantages as Reduced Endurance, Armor Piercing, Autofire, and No Range Modifier).

In combat Fusor’s attacks are rather basic—plaster the target with Pulsar Bolts until it goes down. She’s learning some tactics, and has begun to experiment with her Personal Wormhole power as a way of surprising foes by appearing unexpectedly. She’s also learned the value of using her Stellar Lance to perform devastating Move-Bys and Move Throughs, especially on large vehicles, starships, and space stations.

Appearance: Since her melding with the Starseed, Dana has been transformed into a model of nigh-physical perfection. Her body has become superbly toned, with excellent muscular definition, while her face and figure have had any imperfections burned away by the internal energies of her biological fusion reactor. But as impressive has her once-human physique may seem, it’s no match for her appearance upon assuming her Fusor-form. When her powers are active, Fusor appears as a humanoid manifestation of the night sky. Stars, nebulae, gas clouds, and even galaxies are visible ‘within’ the confines of her body. The only visible facial feature is her eyes, which become pure white, and her hair, which falls in bluish waves down past her shoulders.

Designer's Notes: Fusor is meant to be a cosmic-level superhero, of the sort seen in a Galactic Champions setting. She could be used as an NPC ally, to be called in as needed, as a GMPC, as a PC, or as a wandering hero who happens to share the same universe as the PCs. As written, she’s competent enough, but has enormous potential for growth and expansion. For starters, the Star Seed Dana Sonne bonded with to become Fusor is still within her. What does that mean in the long run? It is possible some of her personality—such as her wanderlust and/or her heroic ideas—comes from the Star Seed (in a darker setting, the Star Seed may have totally subsumed her personality). Or, in a more four-color setting, the Seed becomes a second mind inhabiting her body. Thus, Fusor may have a Mind Link to the Seed and be in constant communication. In that case, the Seed becomes akin to a Self-Aware Computer, with its own INT, EGO, SPD, Skills, and so on. It may have its own Powers as well (such as various Senses and the like), and may even be able to take over Fusor’s body is she’s ever incapacitated.

Powers wise, Fusor is really just starting. As the Star Seed grows, so will her powers. She should get stronger (reaching a60-75 STR), with a larger Endurance Reserve, and increased Pulsar Blasts and movement Multipower. If you don’t give the Star Seed its own character sheet, then it certain could serve as the special effect for giving Fusor either Mental Defense or Mental Damage Reduction (or both).
