Background/History: To an outside observer, Ryan Yamadake (pronounced yah-mah-dah-kay) Garret is an athletic young man with an unusual middle name, who would rather be lost in the woods that sitting at a school desk. Dedicated to the environment and better management of natural resources, Ryan's stated goal in life is to become a forest ranger like his father... or a biologist like this mother... or maybe combine the two - he's not sure. All in all, the picture of a fairly average young man with great plans.

Interesting how looks can be deceiving, isn't it?

What people don't know is that Ryan has a rather interesting secret, which he tries to keep concealed (although it is getting harder all the time) - Ryan is only half-human. Actually, it seems he is fully human, but half of his parentage is extraterrestrial, for his mother, Misato Garret, is a Jurian xeno-biologist. She came to Earth some twenty years ago, intent on studying the native life forms of this rather unusual world. After scanning its surface she fell in love with the thick rain forests of Olympia, and promptly settled down for a long stay. At some point (his parents are fairly hazy about when) Misato was discovered in the midst of her studies by Nicholas Garret. Finding herself falling love with the handsome forest ranger, Misato first passed herself off as a foreign scientist in order to explain her odd accent, hair and clothing. But after saving her future husband from near fatal rock-fall, Misato realized she needed to tell Nicholas the truth.

Discovering the woman you're in love with isn't from Earth threw Nicholas for a bit of a loop; but considering that Nicholas lived in a world where men and woman put on tights, flew through the air and battled costumed villains on a regular basis, maybe it wasn't that so far-fetched after all. Besides, Misato was attractive, single, interested in him, and really knew how to liven up a party.

Eventually the two were married, and were blessed with a son, Ryan. He grew up healthy and strong, taking after both of his parents in this regard. Ryan also began to manifest certain energy projection powers, like his mother, and when he turned 15, Misato took Nicholas and Ryan home, to Jurai, to meet her family (and to have Ryan trained in his newly emerging Juraian powers in the process). Now, a year later, the family has returned to Earth and Ryan is getting ready to face his Junior year of high school. Somehow, Ryan thinks he'd rather be back on Jurai, where he felt safer.

Personality/Motivation: Much of Ryan's outlook on life has been shaped by his parents and their outlook on life. From his father, he has gained an appreciation for the natural world, as well as an understanding of man's place in it. From his mother, he as received a zest for life, and an urge to be a part of the world around him. Thus he ranges from quiet and contemplative (usually when he is out hiking in the woods) to loud and energetic (which is when he is with other people, or engaged in an important project). As a comparison, when with his father, Ryan almost never speaks; it is not that he doesn't want to talk to Nicholas, but rather that communication between the two is unneeded. When he is with his mother, however, the conversation is almost unending, as the two exchange comments, wisecracks and the occasional put down.

When it comes to his Jurai abilities and what to do with them, Ryan has had certain rules pounded into his head by his mother (the fact that she can still beat him in a training fight helps). Simply but, Misato has informed her son that he is not to squander his gifts, but to make proper use of them. Using them for personal gain is not an option.

Ryan himself is unsure exactly what he wants to do with and how to handle his powers. He realizes they can be a great asset here on Earth, but he'd also like to see more of the stars. Of course, he also knows that he can expect to live for another couple of hundred years (actually, close to 1000) so he is in no hurry to decide now. At the moment, he is content to practice with his powers, go to school and plan for college (both his parents have made it very clear that regardless of his future plans , he will have a proper education first). Besides, Port Angeles seems to to have quite a few super-powered beings up and active, and if he finds himself in a situation where he will need to use his Jurai energy powers to deal with it... well, isn't that just his luck?

Quote: "Awww... Mom, you're embarrassing me!"

"My mom always told me to be responsible and use my powers only when I had no other choice... which means you better get ready to get your ass kicked."

"That's not my sister, that's MY Mom!"

Powers/Tactics: Ryan has inherited his mother's race's ability to generate and manipulate powerful surges of energy. This "Jurai Energy" allows the wielder to fly, create defensive energy screens and to hurl potent energy discharges. In order to access this power Ryan must transform from his normal "human" state to a "high-energy" state. This high-energy state is marked by a physical transformation of Ryan's clothing (complete with bright glow of light and blast of wind), as well as a marked increase in Ryan's physical capabilities as his body supercharges itself with Jurai bio-energy.

When exhibited, Ryan's powers appear as brilliant blue-white balls of light, which can be hurled as powerful blasts or bursts of energy. If gripped tightly, a ball will turn into a Beam Sword, an effect that Ryan calls "my lightsaber." Ryan's defensive screens appear either as a pale blue-white haze around Ryan's body or as a bright blue-white plate or wall in front of him.

Due to his ability to fly (which Ryan thinks is the greatest thing in the world), Ryan prefers to battle an opponent from the air. In addition, he tends to fight at range, using his Energy Pulses to weaken an enemy before closing. On the other hand, the Beam Sword is used in tight quarters or an places where an energy pulse would call too much attention. Defensively, Ryan counts on his Energy Screen to absorb most damage, but he will abort to his Energy Barrier if faced by a large or unexpected attack.

Appearance: Ryan takes after both of his parents in appearance. He is fairly tall for a sixteen year-old, with a lean build that comes from spending a lot of active time outdoors . His hair is a pale brown and straight, falling just past his shoulders. His eyes are a dark purple, exactly like his mother's, and are often commented upon by the girls at school.

When dressed for school or other casual events, Ryan dresses in the manner one would expect for a teenager; jeans, sneakers and an endless assortment of T-shirts. His Jurai battledress uniform is something else entirely. It consists of a tan jumpsuit with fairly loose arms and legs, black boots and gloves, and a heavy, brown, knee-length jacket. A black sash keeps the jacket secure, while a black headband keeps his hair out of his face. Small black triangles mark his forehead and cheeks, and Ryan's skin turns a grayish tone. Ryan also owns several sets of formal Jurai robes, used for family occasions. He doesn't wear these very often, as the nearest family is several light years away. They do make good Halloween costumes, however.

Designer's Notes: The character of Ryan Yamadake Garret is loosely based off of material from the Tenchi Muyo! OVA anime series. In the original series, the Royal House of Jurai all have energy projection powers, but since Velyos (another character in the Olympians campaign) had already taken the "alien prince" role, I dropped that aspect. I also decided that the "cultural fish out of water" aspect had been done to death, and went with a more normal upbringing. For those familiar with anime, Ryan's mom is a combination of Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Achika from Tenchi Muyo! In Love.
