Background/History: Kendra (no last name) was introduced in Season 2, during a very convoluted two-part episode in which Spike tried to find a cure for Drusilla's lingering illness. To keep the Slayer from interfering, Spike hired a mystic group of assassins called the Order of Tarokka to kill Buffy. Kendra showed up in Sunnydale at the same time and ran afoul of Angel, who thought she was one of the killers. Kendra tricked Angel and locked him in a storage room with a window facing the sunrise. She then found Angel's apartment, where she ran into Buffy. Kendra attacked and the two girls fought to a standstill, and when Buffy demanded an explanation, the stranger replied, “I am Kendra the Vampire Slayer."

Given that there was only supposed to BE one Slayer at any given time, Buffy was naturally confused. So she took Kendra to Giles and they eventually deduced that when Buffy was drowned by The Master, she did in fact die even though Xander revived her with CPR. For her part, Kendra explained that her family had known of the Slayers' purpose for some time, and willingly gave her to the care of a Watcher so that she could be raised and trained to become the next Vampire Slayer when the previous one died.

As the two Slayers tried to get along, Spike “rescued" Angel from his deathtrap after finding out that the ritual to cure Drusilla required the blood of her sire. Once Buffy found out about this, she went into action to save Angel, letting herself get captured by Spike's assassins. Before he could have her killed, Spike found out that Kendra had arrived with the Scooby Gang as reinforcements, and Spike found himself having to fight two Vampire Slayers. The ensuing battle destroyed the old church where Spike was holding the ritual, and he and Drusilla were presumed dead. Afterwards, Kendra returned home, having made a new friend in Buffy.

Later that year, after Angel had turned evil, Kendra's Watcher sent her back to Sunnydale to help Buffy defeat him. She agreed to help guard the high school as Willow prepared a spell to restore Angel's soul. Before the ritual, Kendra gave Buffy two gifts: A tempered sword handed down from previous Slayers, and her own personal stake, “Mr. Pointy." As Buffy went outdoors to confront Angel, Willow began her ritual in the school library, guarded by the Scooby Gang with Kendra patrolling the halls. As expected, Angel sent his vampire henchmen inside, and Kendra managed to slay at least one of them, but then Drusilla herself arrived to lead the group, and she challenged Kendra to personal combat. The Slayer attacked, and Drusilla fought defensively long enough to make eye contact and hypnotize Kendra. As Kendra stood, entranced and helpless, Drusilla lashed out with sharpened fingernails, slicing open Kendra's throat and killing her instantly.

Personality/Motivation: Kendra's training gave her almost military devotion to slaying, and she was rather awkward dealing with things that her training didn't prepare her for (such as boys). If Faith (who succeeded her) was an example of a Slayer with no sense of responsibility, Kendra was the opposite extreme, a Slayer so devoted to duty that she had no concept of a normal life. Dealing with Buffy (and American culture in general) helped Kendra mellow out somewhat, but she died before she really had time to grow.

Quote: “That's me favorite shirt! ... That's me ONLY shirt!"

Powers/Tactics: Kendra was about on par with Buffy during Season 2 (meaning that if Buffy is played during Season 2 or before, her physical Characteristics should be reduced to this level), but her training made her combat style somewhat rigid, a fact that Buffy herself commented on. Kendra was so focused on the attack that she paid no attention to anything else, and could be taken prey by a surprise maneuver. On the other hand, being raised by Watchers did give Kendra a bit more “book learning" than Buffy, and she seemed to have actually read the “Slayers' Handbook."

NOTE: One of the few black characters on BtVS (along with the vampire Mr. Trick, Riley's friend Forrest, and Principal Robin Wood), Kendra was noteworthy mainly for two reasons: The fact that she lived (establishing the precedent by which two Slayers could exist at the same time) and the fact that she died (paving the way for the appearance of Faith in Season 3).

Appearance: Kendra is short but stocky and very well-built. She has wavy black hair that she usually ties in back, and she normally dresses in practical clothes (her second appearance showed her with fatigue pants and combat boots). Kendra speaks with a weird accent that sounds somewhere between Jamaican and Irish.
