Background/History: Catherine Larchmont-Price was a student at the local university, constantly besieged by suitors that she had to fend off. Even if she wanted a love life, her dorm mate Emily cramped her style, sitting in their room making chants to the ugly wooden idol of some pagan "Goddess."
One night, however, a bolt of Energy X came into the room as Catherine slept, and she received a vision where the Goddess herself appeared to her, claiming that as alchemists tried to change base metal into gold, she had been selected to change the wrong things into right. When Catherine awoke, she was startled to find the Goddess idol in her hands, pulsing with a strange purple glow.
Before she could make sense of this, there was a knock at the door. Catherine answered and saw one of the school football team, obviously drunk, asking to get in. When Catherine refused, he started to get fresh, and as Catherine struggled, a beam of purple energy came from her hands, blasting into the jock and catapulting him through the window outside.
Concluding that the Goddess had given her the power to defend herself, Catherine suddenly became a believer, and she took the words of the vision to heart, making a costume and going out to turn wrong into right—as the Alchemiss.
Personality/Motivation: Alchemiss plays up the stereotype of a Southern belle, is sometimes catty (especially to other women) and tries to control men through flirtation, yet seems almost terrified when a man responds in seriousness (especially after the attempted assault in her dorm room). Despite these negative traits, Alchemiss can be a very effective member of the team, using her powers intelligently and well. Her principal motivation in being a hero is the peculiar notion that "the Goddess" is real and that She, not Energy X, gave Alchemiss her abilities. Over the course of time, Alchemiss started to center her romantic attentions on Man-Bot, partially because she knew he wasn't going to respond in kind and partially because she began to see a core of nobility in him.
Quote: "Ah don't lahk uninvited guests—especially when they don't clean up after themselves."
Powers/Tactics: While Mentor for one might dismiss Alchemiss' abilities as just another form of Energy X mutation, the Freedom Force game does treat magic as a separate special effect for certain defenses, and her powers could thus count as either 'magic' or 'generic mutation'.
Alchemiss' powers do indeed seem to resemble the legends of sorcery, with some powers being 'hexes' that strike with an unpredictable effect (like the Alteration slot, which might drive a target Berserk or cause him to panic or stare into space). Alchemiss' powers also give her some familiarity with dimensional travel, and she later develops the ability to manipulate dimensions, for instance temporarily banishing targets from the Earth plane. Her practical knowledge of dimensional physics came in handy in her first case with Freedom Force, when she had to shut down a portal that was being used to summon dinosaurs from the prehistoric Earth.
Appearance: Alchemiss is a beautiful redhead with a fashionable 'flip' haircut. Her costume is a pink laced dress with long sleeves, very short pleated skirt, and black diamond mask, long gloves, thigh-high boots and cape for trim. The back of the cape has an 'alchemical' A as her symbol.
